hoarding

Thanks to my friend Sharon and her post on hoarding, I decided to take this thing seriously.  Nobody needs this many clothes.

There was only one way to do the job and to do it right, and that was to empty all closets and dresser drawers and start from scratch.

The pile was 4 ft. high.

Five years ago, when I lived in WV I had a walk-in closet.  It was wonderful.

When we moved here  in '06 we had one tiny old-looking closet. ICK.

So I started storing stuff in our adjoining empty guest apartment.

If I wear a different outfit every day for the rest of my life, I'll still have some to take with me when I go.

  Really.

I can never find what I'm looking for.

It's time for a change.  It has to be a drastic one to make a difference.

My side of the closet.
I told myself before I started this project:  'no more clothes than what the closet can store comfortably'.

And I'm getting rid of this thing.  Who needs clothes hanging in their bedroom?  I don't NEED all of these clothes.  I wear the same things over and over again... my faves.

 Wow, an empty drawer.
Haven't seen that in a while.

Half way through the day...  the pile's diminishing.  Hubby and Gracie are giving me the thumbs up and paws down - keep or pitch.

I'm collecting huge garbage bags full of clothes for Goodwill.  A lot of things still have tags on.

Don't worry.  Gracie's just putting on her 'I'm unloved and forgotten'  face. Really, we took her to the tennis courts to run-run-run before dark.

Though the middle of the floor is now without clothes, there's one container that I told myself I could fill with summer stuff is way too full and spilling over and there are too many closet clothes yet.  Another day of sorting and filling up bags for Goodwill should do it.

To be continued....

  1. It's amazing how many things we accumulate and never or seldom use, what a wonderful opportunity to help others and yourself! I was thinking about it when I sent mine off - somebody may be able to get a job, because I sent a bunch of clothes that would be "secretary" or "teller" material, and all machine wash! I am so happy to hear that you are sorting and purging your closet! You will feel so much better and help others in the process!

    Happy Sunday to you!

  2. Way to go! I got rid of so many clothes the other day, actually 3 huge construction garbage bags full, and still my closet is full, and stuff under the bed in storage boxes. Some of the things I have never worn and usually I wear the same things over and over again, because they are my favourites...so what to do? Maybe I get inspired to do better by your post. You are a brave woman to publish this lol..

  5. Oh, I missed Sharon's post on the subject, but this is sooo inspiring. I am not a hoarder, but I still have some of my UCLA office clothes when all I really need here are my jeans. Many, many jeans and some tops, jackets, and boots.

  6. good for you girl!!! I'm all for simplifying and decluttering!! Consider for donating, especially if they are good working type clothes and in good condition and current styles and if there is one close by to you, Dress for Success. If you haven't heard about it, they provide free of charge to low income women going back into the work force outfits for interviews and a few outfits to get them started once they get a job. It is a WONDERFUL organization that helps so many. Just a thought if there is one close to your area!

keep on working!! looking forward to seeing the finished product!

  10. I bit the bullet and did this a few years ago, then took it all to a local women's shelter. I still do need to go through my closet again, as there are some things in there I simply don't wear anymore. It's a liberating feeling to rid yourself of what you don't need! :-)

  11. I had to do the same thing last year. Not because I had too many clothes but because I out grew all of them. I found it tiring but fun at the same time. I know you must feel so much better getting rid of things that you no longer need or wear.
