Maria

Below is a picture of my daughter Lindsey when she was a little girl.  Lindsey loved her baby dolls...  but as with most little girls, she had her favorite.

Maria sold for around $5 and I ordered her from the Family Weekly.  She was a girl doll.  There were boy dolls as well, and yes... you could tell the difference... if you know what I mean!

Lindsey named her doll Maria because she loved the song from The Sound of Music, 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria'...  She  loved musicals!

One day Maria came missing.   She was nowhere to be found. After searching high and low, we finally concluded that a dingo the neighbors dog must have drug her off.  Try telling your three year old that her baby has been stolen by a wild animal and will never return!

So I did the only thing a mother in this situation could possibly do.  I lied...  just a little.

I told her Maria was misplaced, but we'd find her...
 I promised!

Then I made one of the best investments that I've ever made.  I ordered 3 more Maria's from Family Weekly.
Something this tragic would not happen again!

The new Maria looked exactly like the old Maria.
(The other 2 I put away until I was sure the dingo neighbors dog didn't run off with Maria #2, then I got them out and informed Lindsey that Maria was now triplets.)
She was ecstatic!

So now she had Maria, Maria, and Maria.

Don't ask.

Only one Maria lived to see Lindsey grow into adulthood and have a baby girl of her own.  That Maria was passed around at Lindsey's baby shower during a game of 'pass the Maria'.

Maria went on to become Rissi's doll and was mostly a bathtub doll.  Maria drank a lot of bath water and peed in the tub.  Her insides became icky after a while.  A few months ago, after examining Maria closely I decided it was time to say goodbye...  and move on.

It wasn't until I was visiting our local flea market last week that I thought again of Maria.

There she was...  and she had a brother as well.

I thought of buying her...

But then decided...  maybe not.

Maria.

Gone but not forgotten.

  2. This was such a cute story, Bobbi; made you wish you kept one of those Marias safely away. Whoever thought they would appreciate so much over the years? Now I'm curious what the game was at the shower? How did they pass Maria around and what was the object of the game?

  8. I have done things like that. My daughter had a Pillsbury Dough Doll she loved and lost. I wonder how much that would be worth today. I bet not as expensive as Maria and her brother. This was a GREAT story. Your daughter and her triplets were priceless. P.S.) I loved that musical too.

  12. What a super story that was! Now I wish I had saved my boy baby (my kids). But he actually has played the baby Jesus for 14 yrs now at my old church. Guess he will live out his life there.

  13. Great story! Little girls and their baby dolls! Our daughter had her favorite too - Joey. Not the Joey from 'All in the Family', but the Fisher Price Joey - a boy doll that came with 'attached' clothing. He was fine until she took him to live with her at her house a few years ago. One of her own dogs - not a Dingo - ripped his little arm off. She still loves Joey though even if he is wounded.

  15. Awwww...Lindsey was such a cutie pie! Mom wishes she saved all her baby dolls but most were lost in a flooded storage shed in Michigan. Her own daughter was a tom boy and didn't play with dolls but she also had a boy and girl doll that managed to be victimized by Dad who loved to clean and throw away anything not picked up within the last two weeks. GRRRRRRR! Now, enter the granddaughter, Rylee, who is 100% girl. Maybe there will now be some new baby dolls in our lives. (Dat mee can chew up)

Don't you wish you had saved all those Marias? That price was painful!

  20. What a neat story! And I loved the pics... it reminded me of a doll that my sister loved soooo much when she was little, she used to drag that doll with her by it's hair everywhere she went!! Seriously, it's hair finally just stayed sticking straight up from being drug around so much.

I think the fact that you ordered more Marias is sooo sweet! And having a Maria at the baby shower was neat!

    Hugs,
    Jenni
