FREE STUFF

Today on my lunch break I did some shopping.  I got 2 shower curtain liners, a shower curtain, 2 super soft furry blankets for Gracie (on clearance), and a blue duvet cover for our down comforter.  The one we have now is white and thanks to Gracie is doesn't look so white anymore.

Any-hoo...  I had to wait in 'line' a good ten minutes even though I was the only one in line.  You see, there was a nice young lady at the check out who was returning a truck load of undergarments without receipts and then re-buying another truckload - in a number of different transactions.  Suspicious if you ask me, but hey...  who am I to judge?   I remained calm and patient though my arms were killing me from my armloads of merchandise. When she was finally finished I smiled nicely at her as she walked past me.  She put her nose in the air.  Note to self:  ik-snay on underwar-ay oday-ta.

I hated paying $79.99 for a duvet set.  But I had waited for this to go on sale, and it just wasn't happening.  I'll catch the sale and bring my receipt in for a sale adjustment, thought I.

To my surprise, my entire purchase came to less than the duvet was priced.  There must have been a good sale after all.  But when I got back to my office, I checked my receipt - It turns out the saleslady forgot to scan my duvet set.  FREE STUFF.  See.  What goes around comes around.  That was my payment for being patient.

Getting ready to leave for the day, I grabbed up my Sears bag and locked up the office... Then I was ordered by a voice inside my head to  visit the nearest customer service register where a young man and a young lady stood waiting for their next customer.

Me:  Yea, I purchased these earlier today and I don't think I was charged for the duvet set.

Boy:  Are you sure?

Me:  Pretty sure.  Will you check it for me?

Boy checks the receipt and pulls the duvet set from the bag.

Boy: Yep, you're right.

Young girl: You almost got it free!

Me: Yea... I know.

The boy puts the sale through and low and behold it's on sale after all.  $68.00. I give him cash.

Me:  That's better.

Young girl:  Conscience?

Me: Yes - That that DARN conscience!!

Dear Diary,

I'm a pig.  I thought I was a dog.  Mom says only a pig would make her duvet that filthy. I hope pigs are allowed to eat chocolate. Gracie.

  4. Way to GO, Bobbi!!!!! I must say that as I was reading this,I was a bit dissapointed and was wondering what on earth to say in my comment that would not offend you. I couldn't really believe you would do that! It was just not like you. And I was right!!! Now you will sleep so much better under that duvet. As to that woman who stuck her nose in the air, some people are just mean-spirited, be so greatful that you are not like her and feel sorry for her. You are sweet, kind, and caring, and I can't in a million years imagine you with your nose in the air. The world must be an ugly place for her.

  9. What a great post full of lots of lessons!!!
I love a sale especially linens and everyone including precious Gracie has a new bed.

I commend you for your honesty...it seems to be a dying character trait.

Several years ago we were shopping Fresh Market. Upon check out you can ask for cash back (like an atm). We requeted 20.00 back in cash. When we got to the car my husband realized the young lady had given us 40.00 (the bills were new). He went back in to return 20.00. The manger gave us a fresh baked apple pie. We had a clear conscience and a delicious pie.

  13. always good to have a conscience I do believe!!! I have a great story about reporting something we didn't get charged for and the impact it made on someone, you just never know, you know? We were at a restaurant and the waitress was okay but she was a bit snippety and although she gave us great service, I was reluctant to ask her for anything because of her being a bit snippety. We ordered coffee with dessert and when the bill came, we realized she hadn't charged us for the coffee (we always check the tab to make sure all is covered). We drew her attention to it and she corrected the bill. A few weeks later we were back at that same restaurant and I saw her working and I said to hubby "I sure hope we don't get her tonight". But we did, LOL. Instead this time she came to our table with a BIG SMILE on her face and when she introduced herself as our waitress, I said "you served us a few weeks ago" and she said "yep, I remember you guys, you told me I didn't charge you for coffee and asked me to put it on the bill, that rarely happens". And she gave us GREAT service that night. So you just never know, you know?

you did the right thing and deep down you know you did the right thing!

  14. So relatable! I've had that happen to me before too. One time a pair of slippers rang up less than they were marked. When I noticed, I went back and told the store that I owed more for the slippers. They were so shocked, they didn't even know how to correct such a transaction! I figured that I always go back for an adjustment if I'm overcharged, so I should do the same if I'm undercharged.

  15. I had this admiration for you already, just because. See (?), I was right. Being honest is part of being a real great human being.

Now, Gracie girl, chocolate is not good for puppies. It's the pits, I know... if I was a dog I would also ask for some, now and then.
    Love ya!
